Dunstable Cadets fly the Grob Vigilant motorised glider
for Gliding Induction.
They can also achieve their Blue, Silver and Gold 'Wings' for
gliding proficiency including Solo and Advanced standard
The starting point for your gliding experience will be at a Volunteer Gliding
School (VGS) which will fly either Vigilant motor gliders or Viking winch
launched gliders. You will begin by attending, with others from the squadron
your affiliated VGS (in the case of Dunstable Squadron this is 616 VGS at RAF
Henlow) to be taught the Gliding Induction Course (GIC)
The GIC has been designed to give you a taste of Air Cadet Gliding and
consists of 3 different levels of instruction. You will be shown various aspects
of aerodynamics that you will have been taught in the classroom before being
taught the effects of the controls in the air. You will have the opportunity to
take control and practice what you have learned.
Viking
From the age of 16 you could be selected for a Gliding Scholarship. This
means you will spend either a week or a number of week-ends at the VGS and learn
to fly the glider to solo standard. On passing the course you will be awarded
either your 'Blue' or 'Silver' Wings. From there, again if selected, you can
progress to the Advanced Gliding Course at the Central Gliding School at RAF
Syerston and be awarded your 'Gold' Wings, or even go on to get your pilots license
and become an instructor, all before your 20th birthday.
